SQUARE ROOTS

The mushroom-columns are both constructively and visually the foundation of the Glaspaleis. Using these iconic elements as the basis for the ‘Schunck pavilion’ therefore seems an obvious thing to do. Since the pavilion has different needs than the original building a bit of rethinking needs to be done. To optimally fit and serve their new habitat, the Schunck-columns need a makeover.

A column in the Schunck-pavilion is more than just supportive structure. Each column by itself is both roof, structure and exposition element. The comprehensive Schunck-column comes in four different sizes. A small one that creates space around itself by being thin, a medium sized column that is big enough to house a projector, touchscreen or an interface, a large column that serves as a display case or socket for art-pieces and a large column whose inner space can be used for a personal exposition experience. Together they form a modular and expandable system that can be configured to match any contextual challenge and any exhibition format. A set of 20 columns creates a floorspace of around 110 square meters.

The new columns are shaped as an abstraction of the original. Instead of octagonal, they are simply square-shaped. This creates more vertical surface and more functional floorspace. All column foots, except for the XL, are off-centered to create a larger freedom of floor plan lay-outs. At the core of each column is a light and detachable steel frame that allows easy assembly and transportation. A waterproof sock is buttoned to this frame and ensures wind and waterproofness. The sock can be customized with perforations and zippers to create doors and look-throughs. Since all the framework is stackable, a 110 m2 pavilion fits within a single truckload.

S-column
The small column provides space around. It creates space for sculptures, models, gatherings, lectures and dance performances.

M-column
The medium sized column offers an integrative solution for screens, touchscreens and other media that can be placed inside.

L-column
This column provides four vertical surfaces for projections, paintings and posters. It also offers a showcase in its core that allows daylight to enter from above. Visitors can look inside through the optional perforations in the fabric. Models, sculptures and ‘no-touching-allowed’ objects can be placed here.

XL-column
The extra large column provides a sizable vertical surface for suspended art and projections. It also houses an acoustically protected media room where visitors can watch a movie or enjoy a soundscape.

Transformability
The pavilion is based on a rectangular module system of 2,44m by 2,44m. By connecting the units in different layouts, the pavilion can play with the context in which it is placed. Moreover, it creates different exposition layouts. In this way the pavilion creates a unique experience each time it is set up.
