Concept

Schunck as an institution deals with diverse aspects of art and culture, but first of all with its
interface. So do we see the pavilion as a space of interface. Here music encounters art, design
encounters literature. Genres of art and urban influences unify and in an interdisciplinary synergy
they set free innovative and modern energy in the sense of a “Newseum”. Out of the interaction of
Symposium, Music and Art arises the SMArt.
Also the pavilion represents the interface between institution of art and publicity. In this case art
comes to the visitor and both unify in urban context. The pavilion is meeting place of diverse
influences and housing of its interactions.
In the same time the pavilion as flexible inventory of urban space, gains great importance. Its task is
to implant itself in urban structure and to enter into a dialogue with its context, if applicable even
implicate the context by building around urban commodity and convert it into an object of exposure
itself. As an autonomic atom it has to attract, but it also has to maintain relation with his
surroundings.

Functions & Access

The centre of the building is formed by a square space of 4.14 x 4.14m. Here interested spectators
find in and gain first impressions of the current exhibition. The square shape symbolizes the
directionless and all-side accessible forum and formulates the nucleus of the synergies. The square
shape is suitable for carrying out diverse events such as exhibitions, forums, meeting events,
concerts, film demonstrations, information events, performances and art installations. Laterally there
is a ramp which in it further course winds around the central space. While the square central forum
serves for information, orientation and discussion and is static, the ramp forms the dynamic
counterpart, where exhibits are placed and the visitor actively heads for his impressions. The ramp
surrounds the centre like a twister and illustrates transformation and synergetic connection, evoked
by interaction of visitors with each other and their interaction with art. The ramp leads the visitor up
in a concentric movement. The visitor thereby inspects the exhibits but has the possibility to watch
the urban space through the transparent façade, which provokes an interplay. Through the change of
perspective urban space becomes a coulisse and displays to the visitor common motives from
unknown views. The roof of the building is formed by a staged zone, an open air lounge. It serves
well as stand for film demonstration. It is also adequate to relax, to bask, to discuss and to reflect.
The ramp ends with an observation platform which offers a view on urban space and so crowns the
exhibition with an actual and present impression.

Construction & Material

The construction is simple to fulfill cost demands. The basic structure is formed of used facades
scaffold of Layher Allroud System. So the chosen construction also meets the requirements of a rapid
and flexible construction. Four edge elements form the basis. The scaffold inlay floors of OSB boards
brace the construction horizontally. Diagonal elements brace vertically. In principle the ramp can be
build up arbitrarily in height. So the construction complies with the demand for flexibility and
extension. The disclaim of inlay floors in the centre provides the possibility to embrace an urban
element like a fountain or a tree. Disclaiming the roof you get an atrium. So diverse types of
exhibition scenarios are possible.
The façade consists of polycarbonate multi-walls. They provide a diffuse look through the building
and visualize the interplay of intern synergies and relation to its context. Their light weight assures
easy installation. There are two standard formats and few special formats which allows arbitrary
positioning and easy replacement. The railing is made of low priced wire mesh.
